It reviews the literature on both evidence-based and promising approaches to treatment that facilitates sharing power and decision-making between families and service providers in treatment for early and intergenerational trauma, culminating in a proposed set of trauma-informed family engagement (TFE) indicators that organizations, infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) providers, researchers, policymakers, and other IECMH stakeholders can use to measure progress toward strong, systemwide, and sustained family engagement in trauma treatment. This chapter describes effective approaches to engaging families in mental health treatment for infant and early childhood trauma.
